Aztec Sculpture

Aztec sculpture is unique in the sense that combines the natural world with the supernatural. Religious symbolism is present in almost every surviving example or Aztec art, this is not surprising as Aztecs understood the world as a place were both natural and supernatural forces coexisted.

While only some examples of Aztec sculpture remain, it is easy to appreciate the advanced level of craftsmanship that Aztec artists were able to achieve with mere soft metal and stones tools. The size and monumentality of some pieces, like the Sun Stone (Aztec Calendar) or the recently discovered monolith of Tlaltecuhtli, are irrefutable examples of the power and sophistication that the empire had acquired.
